Tamil Nadu Free Sarees Dhoti and Bicycle Scheme for Poor Students
Yesterday on 4th January 2017, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. O Panneerselvam has launched a free bicycle scheme for the poor students of class 11th. This scheme will cost an approximate Rs. 244 crore to the state’s exchequer. Besides this, the state government has also announced free sarees and dhoti scheme by keeping in mind the harvest festival of ‘Pongal’.
This free bicycle scheme was firstly launched by the late Chief Minister Jayalalitha in the 2001-2002 academic session to help Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students. In order to include the students of all the schools who are receiving financial aid from the state government, this scheme was expanded.
During the program, CM Panneerselvam officially starts the scheme by distributing seven bicycles to students. According to a statement, he also distributed sets of sarees and dhotis to seven families at the Secretariat. Minister and Senior Officials were present there.
AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran has introduced the ‘Dhoti and Saree Scheme’ in 1983. This scheme was launched with an aim of helping the poor besides providing them jobs in the textile and handloom industry.
CM Panneerselvam informed that the state government will distribute 3.24 crore dhotis and sarees to the needy people at the expense of 487 crore.
