The State Government of Tamil Nadu is going to hike the benefits by Rs. 5000 given under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme for providing optimal nutrition for pregnant and lactating women.

As per the state health department officials, the TN Government has increased the financial assistance provided to the pregnant mothers under the ambitious Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme to Rs 18,000 from Rs 12,000.
The Public Health Director Dr. K Kolandaisamy said that the new guidelines are under process to sanction Rs 18,000 along with revised nutrition programmes under the scheme. Till date, the state government was providing the financial assistance of Rs 12,000 in three installments of Rs 4000 each to the pregnant women aged 19 years or more on conditional release and restricted for the first two deliveries only.
Under this Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme, the state government will provide benefits to all the pregnant woman of the state who belongs to BPL (below poverty line) category of the society and this benefit will be provided to those pregnant women who are availing the all required antenatal services during pregnancy in concerned primary health center can get benefits from this scheme.
The state government provides cash assistance to the mothers whose delivery takes place in the government institutions and complete immunization for the child up to the third dose of vaccinations under universal immunization programme. Apart from this, the other conditions regarding this scheme are being upgraded and will be implemented shortly.
The Tamil Nadu Government has mandate the the registration of pregnant women with the ‘Pregnant and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME)’ portal. This portal generates a 12-digit ‘Reproductive and Child Health’ (RCH) ID number and the entries for availing the benefits. It can be done only for the mothers having PICME number with her during delivery.
As per the information provided by the officials, a total of 25,698 pregnant women has received the cash assistance of `21.76 crore under Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme in the previous two years in the district.
